Aeriol chats with Beth Proudfoot Marriage and Family Therapist who helps grown ups act like grown ups by advocating the Collaborative Divorce process. An advocate for children's rights and peaceful communication Beth helps families navigate the treacherous waters of divorce with open honest and peaceful communications.

Tell us a little bit about the work you do: I wear a couple of hats. As a child therapist and parent educator, I work with kids and parents to improve behavior, resolve issues with childhood anxiety and depression, and generally make family life happier. As a Divorce Communication Coach, I work in the Collaborative Divorce model to help couples to make this transition in a way that's healthiest for their children.

How or why did you begin doing the work that you do?: Well...I started out as a drama major at Stanford. And eventually realized that although I love to act, I don't want to live an actor's life. Second choice: psychology. Shortly after I began my private practice working with children, though, I started to have kids of my own. I ended up putting my therapy practice on hold...but couldn't help continuing doing parent education at local schools. The applause...well...it's what every stay-at-home mom needs every once in awhile!

I went through a divorce shortly after I turned 50, and returned to private practice seeing kids. Within a couple of years I had way too many clients and ended up expanding. Now, I run a group practice with 5 therapists working for me.

What SUPER TIP or piece of advice would you like to share with the world?: When people are facing divorce, it's like they are looking at a dark and dangerous forest, with only one path visible, the one that leads to a traditional adversarial process with its painful and sometimes devastating consequences, not only for the couple but for their children.

THERE ARE OTHER PATHS! Collaborative Divorce is a growing movement around the world which seeks to help couples to transition with respect and dignity. With its focus on improving communication and keeping the children out of the middle, it leads to by far the best outcomes for the children and for their parents.

Bio: Beth Proudfoot is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 30 years of experience helping parents and children to stay calm, stay positive, communicate well, and resolve conflicts respectfully. A co-author of the audio book “The Magic of Positive Parenting,” Beth is frequently quoted as a parenting expert in publ
